
Chiaka Ihekwaba
Judge, Miami-Dade County
Judge Chiaka Ihekwaba was appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis in June 2020 to the Miami-Dade County Court in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida. Prior to her judicial appointment, she was an Assistant State Attorney for Miami-Dade County State Attorney’s Office for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit from August 2001 till June 2020. She handled the prosecution of thousands of cases including homicide, armed robberies and sexual battery cases to verdict in Circuit Court. Judge Ihekwaba currently serves in the Civil Division of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit as a County Court Judge.
Judge Ihekwaba is a member of the Gwen S. Cherry Black Women Lawyers Association and the National Black Prosecutors Association.
On June 24, 2020, Governor Ron DeSantis announced the appointment of Chiaka Ihekwaba (’01) to the Miami-Dade County Court. Ihekwaba, of Miami, has been an Assistant State Attorney for the Eleventh Circuit since 2001. She has served as Division Chief in the Felony Division. She received her Barrister-at-Law degree from the Nigerian Law School, her LL.M. from King’s College in London, and her law degree (J.D.) from St. Thomas University School of Law. Ihekwaba fills the vacancy created by the elevation of another St. Thomas School of Law alumna, Judge Lody Jean.
